Donald Cameron of Lochiel

Donald was known as 'The Gentle Lochiel', succeeding to the leadership of the clan at the age of 21 in 1716. He met Prince Charles Edward Stuart (The Young Pretender) on his landing at Loch nam Uamh in July 1745, and against his better judgment agreed to support a Jacobite rising. On this, other clans came in to join the force. After Culloden Donald was one of those close to the Prince during the months in hiding, part of this time in a cave close to Achnacarry. The house was later burned by Cumberland's troops. Donald was attainted of High Treason and his estates forfeited. [See Report of the Surveyor of Forfeited Estates among the Research papers.]
