Brother to Ewen Beag, he was probably murdered by the second son of Ewen M'Ewen of Erracht, John Dow M'V'Ewen, who was executed for the murder in 1585 at Dunstaffnage (?). Erracht's first son, meanwhile, had been murdered in revenge in about 1570 by a section of the clan adhering to Lochiel.
