Edinr 23 January } Unto The Right Honourable The Lord Chief Baron and 1748/9--- eminent Barons of his majesties Court of Exchequer in Scotland ~~ The Report of David Bruce Esqr one of the surveyors appointed by Your Lops/ upon the forfieted Estates in Scotland.~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Humbly setteth forth______ That in obedience to your Lordships instructions I have surveyed the ~~~~ Estate which pertained to Donald Cameron the younger of Lochiel, (attainted for high Treason) lyeing in the parish of Kilmaly and Shires of Argyll and Inverness, and find that there are a number of small wadsetts on sd Estate, the rights of which were granted by the sd Donald Cameron his predicessors and Authors, th severall persons contained, upon the first and second pages of the preceeding abstract Rental For security of the respective principal sums annexed to their names amounting in whole to the principal sum of £28666-13-4 Scots money The annual rent of which principal sum is £1433-6-8 money foresd and that the___ wadsetters are lyable to pay yearly of Superplus rents after getting allowance of sd annual Rents £1064-17-5 Scots, 37 Stone weight Cheese, 37 Quarters Buttar, 20 Wedders, 13 calves and 11 kids or Lambs which @ rents and Superplus Rents being added Makes The Total yearly rent of sd wadsett Lands £2498-4-1 Scots and the above number and Quantity of Casualties And find that the gross yearly rent of the wadsett Lands of sd Estate,_______ as Contained upon pages 3-4-5 & 6th of the preceeding abstract is £2209-4-8 Scots,____ B37-f2-meal, B31-f2-Bear 18 Stone weight Cheese, 18 Quarters Buttar, 31 wedders, 12 Calves, and 15 kids, or Lambs To which being added The gross yearly rent, and Casualties of the____ foresd wadsett Lands, The Total Gross rent of sd whole Estate amounts to £4707-8-9 Scots, B37-f2-meal, B31-f2-Bear, 55 Stone weight Cheese, 55 Quarters Buttar, 51 wedders, 25 Calves and 26 kids or Lambs and the sd victual and Casualties being converted as follows vizt_ The meal at 8 merks p Boll Bear at 10 merks p Boll Cheese and Buttar at 5 merks for the stone weight Cheese and Quart Buttar, The Sheep at £1-16 each Calves at 12sh. each and the kids and Lambs at 5sh. each all Scots money, being the common Conversions of the victual and Casualties on sd Estate, as p affidavit on page 56 of the Judicial Rental The same amounts to £706-12-8 Scots which Sum being added to the above money rents The Total yearly rent of sd Estate of ___ Lochiel is £5414-1-5 Scots money In Sterling £451-3-55/12 and that the wadsetters and tenants are lyable to pay the Kings Css ministers Stipend and other publick burdens________ over and above their rents; and that their money rents and Casualties are payable yearly at the martinmass after their entry, and the victual Rents at the martinmass after reaping the Crops and it is to be observed that the Lands mentioned waste in the preceeding abstract, are stated at the rents payable furth thereof when formerly possess by Tenants.________________________ I also in obedience to your Lordships Commands, made Enquiry with respect to the condition of the present tenants and others the possessors of sd Estate, and the condi- -tions of their dweling and office houses and barnyeards and was informed that most of them both waddsetters and tenants were at present in mean Circumstances, and that most of______ their houses were brunt by the kings troops after the rebellion and are not as yet sufficiently___ Repaired______________________________________________________________________ And I made enquiry as to what arrears or rests of rent, remain unpaid in the hands of the wadsetters and tenants and what arrears were in there hands at the time of the sd _________ Donald Camerons attainder and found by the Discharges produced by them, in their____________ several Depositions that the sd Donald Cameron had Discharged them of their Rents for Crops and martinmass 1746, which Discharges are all dated at Glenmalie the 8th may 1746 And Find that the Total arrear due from sd Estate at and preceeding martinmass 1747 as on page 10th of the Preceeding abstract is £3162-2. Scots B37-f2-meal, B31-f2-Bear, 55 Stone weight Cheese, 55 Qrs__ Buttar, 50 wedders, 25 Calves, and 23 kids or Lambs which victual and Casualties being Converted at The prices aforesd and added to the above money arrear The Total arrear presently due from sd Estate Is £3866-3-8 Scots money In Sterling 322-3-78/12 ________________________________________ And I also made Enquiry, if there was any yeards Orchards Parks Inclosures, meadows and any grounds not inclosed Dove houses Conniegares, or others not under Rental, which were in the proper possession of the sd Donald Cameron, or of any other person for his use but could find none of the above particulars, only was informed that there was a garden at achnacarrie belonging to sd Estate which was intirely Destroyed by the Kings Troops when they burnt the house of Lochiel in summer 1746 And I made enquiry if there was any woods fishings Lime Quarries or any other Casual Estate which pertained to the sd Donald Cameron, and was in his possession, or in the possession of any other persons for his use And Found that there is several firr oak, and other woods on sd Estate and the Salmond fishings underwriten vizt_ The fishing of Kenlochiel, at the head of Lochiel, The fishing of Sluggan on the water of Lochie, The fishing of Corpache in Lochiel and the Cruive fishing at achnacarrie which fishings of Sluggan and Corpache are presently possessed by John Ritchie merchant in mary burgh, and the rents thereof as given up by him in his________ Deposition page 60 of the Judicial Rental, Stated in the preceeding abstract and contained in the total amount of the rent of the said Estate and that the said fishing of Kenlochiel, has not____ been wrought for these five years past but the same is also stated in the preceeding abstract at the rent given up by the said John Ritchie in his Deposition above mentioned and found that the said Cruive fishing is worth no rent, that it would take as much to uphold the Cruive and Dyke as the fish caught therein would be worth. and Find that there is a Limequarry of Glendessary___ and a Quarry of Blue Sclates at Ballechelish, both which Quarrys were never mad use of, but for upholding the houses and garden Dykes at achnacarrie and which were never wrought but by the sd Donald Cameron for his own use and that there is a Deer forrest in Glenkingie on sd Estate______ In which there was a great many Deer._________________________________________________ And I appointed proper persons to inspect and value the aforesd woods on sd Estate and find by their affidavit on page 59 of the Judicial Rental that the woods underwritten are presently worth the sums following vizt_ The firr wood of glenmalie £350. the oak wood of muick £5._______ The oak wood of Inverkoiaig £5. The Bush of Oaks at Drumsailhe £100. the Bush of Oaks at Annat £20. and a few oaks at keleross £2. all sterling money said haille woods amounting to £932. Sterling. And that there are several Bushes of Birch and Allar and Hazel on said Estate but the same are of no value but for upholding the Tenants Houses._________________ And I made enquiry for the personal Estate Corns Cattle Horses Sheep and other goods and Chattells which pertained to the sd Donald Cameron and for the Charter Chest and papers which belonged to him but could find none of the above particulars only was informed that there was a debt of £1000. Sterling due to him by some merchant in whitehaven for wood.
